A deep, textured synth is recast in the role of a Free Jazz saxophonist, weaving between Scott-Heron’s words in a way that’s both fitting and yet blatantly anachronistic.
Seven seconds in and the two recordings are near-identical, but it’s in the remaining 23 that the French producer breathes new life into the original. Both his and the 1970 cut share the same title, both run for less than a minute, and Wax Tailor's version leans heavily enough on Gil Scott-Heron’s spoken word for the late musician-poet to be given a posthumous credit as a featured artist. This 30-second interlude from Wax Tailor’s latest full-length is in truth more of a remix than it is a straight sample. For his role in splicing these unlikely cuts together (and it really works), the 22 year old Floridian earns himself a featured credit on what is sure to be a summer hit as soon as those beach clubs re-open. It's a pretty awkward piece of theater, but it sets the tone perfectly for this aspirational and unashamedly commercial feel-good cut which draws heavily on Luther Vandross' 80s Soul anthem 'Never Too Much.' More accurately, the song was inspired by Amorphous' mashup of Luther and Rihanna which went viral toward the end of last year. The video for Fat Joe's latest offering 'Sunshine (The Light)' opens with a cast of Hip Hop high rollers which includes Diddy and DJ Khaled, dripping in ice and silky garms on a flashy yacht, reminiscing on Joe's early life as a Bronx graffiti artist and toasting his success. But both here and on ‘Apricots,’ it comes to Bicep far more naturally than for any of their rivals.įat Joe feat. Bicep might not be the first high-profile producers to connect with the choir’s polyphonic chants Wyclef Jean and Jason Derülo have both cropped up on beats utilising the choir, whilst FKA twigs’ ‘ Holy Terrain’ – which sampled a track from the same album as ‘Houbava Milka’ – made it into our 2019 Staff Picks list. The Northern Irish duo said they were drawn to the sounds of the Bulgarian state choir since the intonations and scales reminded them of the Celtic Folk Music they heard growing up in Belfast, a familiarity reflected in the way they can seamlessly integrate the women’s voices into UK Bass and Future Garage as if they sung with Bicep's production in mind.
